Innovative VR and MR Driving Experience by BMW
BMW Group has unveiled enhancements to its BMW M Mixed Reality experience, aiming to further blur the lines between digital worlds and actual driving. This advanced technology transforms the car itself into an interactive gaming controller, offering an immersive 3D connection for drivers and vehicles.
One of the standout additions is the introduction of multiplayer functionality. Drivers can now compete in head-to-head races, while audiences can engage via personalized avatars on the BMW M Mixed Reality Bridge. Devices like Meta Quest and Apple Vision Pro allow spectators to virtually enter the action. Originally a single player experience since late 2023, the enhanced features now include more individualized worlds and events.
Tech Meets Motorsport
The updated Mixed Reality experience introduces the Mixed Reality Rooftop Circuit, challenging drivers to gather BMW M coins and navigate obstacles. The in-car system precisely syncs with the VR headset, reflecting real-time car movements down to each twist and brake.
BMW plans further advancements, including a drifting capability, though specifics about its launch remain under wraps. Additionally, the brand is exploring further training applications using this technology, like a Professional Track Trainer to advise on racing lines and braking points.
MINI Steps into the VR Arena
BMW-owned MINI has also ventured into mixed reality. MINI’s immersive experience invites users into the design world of the all-electric MINI Aceman, merging creative vision with technological innovation. This unique drive is set to reshape how customers interact with the new MINI Family.
The promise of augmented reality continues to evolve in automotive, with studies showing its potential to cut down automotive staff training times. Case studies with companies like Daimler already highlight the operational advantages of AR in vehicle maintenance.
