Innovative VR Training Initiative for Students with Disabilities in North Dakota

Advancing Education Through XR Technology

North Dakota is at the forefront of immersive education, thanks to a $9.9 million partnership between CareerViewXR, Bismarck State College, and the U.S. Department of Education’s Disability Innovation Fund. This initiative, known as the ‘XR for VR project’, aims to revolutionize vocational training by utilizing XR technologies to support youth and adults with disabilities.

The project, enriched with insights from numerous collaborators including Impact Dakota and ND Assistive, strives to equip individuals with disabilities for competitive employment. BSC President Doug Jensen highlighted the significance of enhancing the state’s workforce capabilities.

Enhancing Opportunities in the Workforce

Alicia Uhde, Project Director, stresses that XR for VR aims to illuminate career paths within manufacturing, often perceived as inaccessible, highlighting the talents of an eager workforce. The immersive setup replicates manufacturing settings, providing practical training environments.

Nationwide Scaling Potential

CareerViewXR’s CEO, Matt Chaussee, views the initiative as a pivotal point for students, offering access to career paths previously out of reach. The immersive project expands into nine learning spaces, featuring projected environments for students and HTC VIVE headset options.

Through realistic job simulations, students learn by seeing successful peers in action, fostering a culture of inclusion. The initiative also serves to educate employers on adjustments that enable hiring from the disability community with ease.

Expanding Technology Across the State

Over 300 HTC VIVE VR headsets were distributed to North Dakota schools, reinforcing the partnership with hardware provider HTC VIVE. This collaboration facilitated the integration of CareerViewXR’s immersive platform, supporting educators in utilizing VR for impactful learning experiences. Students engage with 360-degree immersive tours, offering a glimpse into professions across various industries.

The program promises to instill independence and connect employers with valuable skill sets, indicating a true win-win for all stakeholders.
