Meta CTO Shares Insights on Upcoming AR Innovations, Meta Connect 2024, and More

Anticipation for Meta Connect 2024

Meta Connect is drawing near, with significant expectations surrounding the next big announcements on September 28th. Andrew Bosworth, Meta’s CTO, recently shared thoughts on the event through his Instagram account.

Discussing Meta Connect 2024, Bosworth emphasized the developer-centric nature of the event:

I’m incredibly biased, so make your own call. I think we’ve got the usual exciting stuff in terms of launches, some incredible technology demos of what’s to come. We really do want this to be a developer conference. A great developer conference where hopefully devs go and they hear that we understand the problems that they have, that we care about, those problems that we’re investing in, solutions to those problems that are going to make their lives easier.

Bosworth highlighted the presence of an AR product that he described as groundbreaking, suggesting it will significantly impact the future trajectory of VR and MR technologies.

Meta to Close Spark AR in 2025

Meta is discontinuing Spark AR, its SDK for creating AR effects on platforms like Messenger, Instagram, and Facebook. This move will lead to a more centralized approach to AR content managed by Meta. The shutdown, scheduled for January 14, 2024, marks a shift towards more sophisticated AR models, particularly with the development of AR smart glasses.

Addressing the closure, Bosworth called Spark AR a pivotal yet technically limited platform unsuitable for MR/AR expansions:

Spark was a special platform and it’s such a tremendously important part of how people were introduced to an early form of augmented reality…However, it wasn’t the right technical foundation for creating great experiences in MR/AR, so we have to move to something better.

Reactions to PICO 4 Ultra and Motion Trackers

PICO has launched the PICO 4 Ultra headset and a lightweight Motion Tracker. These trackers offer easy, full-body input for immersive applications.

PICO motion trackers seem cool, and I think it’s fun that they’re doing that. It’s great to see innovations in the industry, but the need for extreme precision in motion tracking is somewhat niche.

Integrating AI into Meta Devices

Meta continues to integrate AI solutions across its devices and platforms. Bosworth mentioned plans to enhance the Quest portfolio and Horizon OS with AI, which he believes will eventually improve language barrier solutions.

John Carmack’s Perspectives

Former Meta CTO John Carmack has expressed concerns about the Quest Pro and Meta’s open approach to developer applications. Despite differing views, Carmack remains in contact with Bosworth and Zuckerberg, frequently sharing his input.

John shares opinions pretty freely…He sends notes to me and Mark, and we’re always grateful for it. I’d love to have him back on the program at some point.

As Meta Connect approaches, the tech world eagerly waits to see how Meta’s latest innovations will measure up.
